I can’t make you love me if you don’t

I was talking with a friend about dog behavior earlier today and the old Bonnie Raitt lyric came to mind. He was out with his dog and came across another owner with his Chihuahua who responded anxiously to them; his dog, in turn, responded by getting anxious. We talked about how important it is to be able to read dogs that we come across to determine how they will impact the dog(s) that we are caring for.  At the end of the day, we can only control the things that are within our sphere of responsibility and the dogs that we run across in public areas do not fall within that sphere. As much as we might like our dogs to love each other, unfortunately that will not always happen

Both Patricia McConnell, in her book, The Other End Of The Leash, and Myrna Milani in The Body Language and Emotions of Dogs offers great insight about how our dogs communicate and gives us signs about their mental states.

36 dog miles today with 767 since tracking began.
